Scientists Research Methods to Detect Hidden Peat Fire Smouldering Foci
Scientists from the Civil Protection Research Institute of the NUCEU, together with the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine (NASU), are researching thermal processes in peatlands to detect hidden smouldering foci early and improve firefighting tactics.

The work is being carried out under a collaboration agreement with the State Institution "Scientific Centre for Aerospace Research of the Earth of the Institute of Geological Sciences, NASU".

During the experiments, coal was placed at various depths within soil samples to analyse changes in soil temperature. Precise temperature and moisture sensors, alongside thermal imaging equipment, were deployed to perform the measurements. Such technologies are already used by SES units, enabling them to detect temperature anomalies promptly and assess the condition of potentially hazardous areas.

The results obtained will help refine peat fire forecasting, improve the detection of hidden smouldering spots, and enhance post-extinguishment monitoring.

This marks another step by Institute researchers towards developing proactive solutions that will help rescuers prevent reignition and boost the efficiency of peatland firefighting efforts.
