How Scientists Test Life-Saving Equipment
Specialists from the Civil Protection Research Institute of the NUCEU systematically test specialised equipment supplied to SES units, as its reliability directly affects the lives of rescuers and the people they serve.

Firefighting vehicles and specialised emergency rescue equipment are tested for compliance with established technical requirements under conditions that closely mimic real-world operations. This includes pyrotechnic vehicles, turntable ladders, mobile cranes, heavy transport, and breathing apparatus support vehicles.

The researchers measure individual technical parameters and evaluate the functionality and reliability of the equipment. For instance, during winch testing, the cable is subjected to its maximum working load to ensure the equipment can withstand the strain and tow ultra-heavy vehicles at critical moments.

This approach makes it possible to identify hidden defects and design flaws before the machinery enters operational service. If significant malfunctions or non-compliance with technical parameters are identified, the equipment is returned to manufacturers for modification. It is handed over to emergency crews only after all issues have been rectified and the equipment successfully passes re-testing.
The Institute’s specialists ensure that equipment meets established technical standards, guaranteeing that reliable, high-quality, and thoroughly tested fire rescue vehicles and special equipment reach units across Ukraine.
