SES scientists are researching the effectiveness of fire extinguishing agents under the bonnet of a car
A bonnet fire breaks out instantaneously, and putting it out is a real challenge. To determine which agents perform best under varying temperature conditions, specialists from the Civil Protection Research Institute of the National University of Civil Defence of Ukraine conducted a series of experiments.
During the testing, the scientists simulated an actual fire inside a mock engine compartment by igniting A-95 petrol and plastic components, specifically acrylic glass (Plexiglas). This allowed them to replicate the real hazard that can arise under the bonnet. The specialists compared the fire-extinguishing efficacy of various agents for suppressing fires in a vehicle's under-bonnet space.
The researchers measured the temperature at the seat of the fire, evaluated the extinction rate, and checked for any reignition after the flames had been brought under control. The findings from these experiments will help select the most effective fire suppression agents for under-bonnet fires and update vehicle fire safety requirements.
